Animal activists or why they try to prevent us from raising animals

Propaganda is always a good way to prevent a sensible debate.

Let’s face it : there is not a single nation that does not have a tradition centred around meat. If you have ever seen the Godfather movie, you know how Italian weddings are. Usually, there is a lot of meat being served. South American cultures tend to feast on a whole animal from time to time too. There is also the popular pig roast that seems to be part of about any national tradition. When I was in France (I spent a whole year there as a kid), I remember eating a few birds that were slowly roasted on the fire. The birds had been hunted by a friend of ours, and he decided to throw a party so that everyone would enjoy the birds (I think I have not eaten better birds since then). No matter how you look at it, animal eating has always been a bonding experience for humans.

The tale of fat loss supplements

Fat loss supplements have been around for a few years already and, by now, we should know which ones actually work or not. In this regard, it seems that a lot of ”experts” know what you should take to lose weight. For instance, if you go to your local supplement shop, they will make sure to point you out the newest and best fat burner. Their selling speech is always the same : ”I have ”lots of clients” who tried it and lost weight, you should try it out too!”. Also, if you go on fitness forums, rest assured that online experts will educate you on which one you should take. After all these years of fat loss supplementation, can we really say they work?

The role of carbs in the paleo diet

Bad, bad carb source.

Last week, I tried to cover the role of fruit in the paleo diet. I have also covered dairy in the past. I have decided to cover more of the grey area in the paleo lifestyle. I have already pointed out that the paleo diet is extremely flexible (there is more than a single paleo diet) and that, evolutionarily speaking, it’s the only diet that fits us. Long time readers know that I stress the importance of avoiding dogmatism by tweaking the diet for their own needs. Today, we will attack one of the most controversial subjects in the paleo diet community : carbs. Good or Evil? To avoid or to not avoid? You will have to keep reading to know.

Why are we fat?

Thousands and thousands of books, Internet websites, and specialists are dedicated to finding or explaining why we – civilized humans living in industrial societies – are fat. This never ending quest to find the few factors that are making us fat has been productive. We now know where we should dedicate our efforts (diet, exercise, sleep, etc.) However, we can’t really say that our society knows how to make those factors better for us (or, we would all be healthier by now).  Plus, there are so many opinions around that one can get lost when trying to find a way to improve his own health. Today, I will present some of those factors in details (those that are easily improvable). Tomorrow, we will see how we can actually try to improve them.

Fruit: its role within the paleolithic diet

Poison?

Yesterday, I explained why I believe that the paleolithic diet is the best diet tool we have access to. I also talked about how there are unresolved debates within the paleo community. I already covered one of them in the past (dairy). Let’s try to replicate this process with fruits. What do the experts think about them? Are they healthy or not ? Is the sugar content something we should worry about? How many of them should we eat in a day? What is my personal stance on fruits? We will try to address all those concerns today and hopefully resolve this conflict.

What’s with all the ”superfoods” ?

When you think about it, it is actually ironic. We live in an era where more and more people don’t believe in anything and where people are getting individualistic. Indeed, in most industrial societies, religion is getting less and less popular. Miracles, magic, and even traditions are not the base of our lifestyle anymore. Some of us even don’t care about it at all anymore. Yet, we contradict ourselves when we choose to believe that superfoods exist. Read more of this post

Dairy is probably not a bad choice afterall

Dairy : Healthy or not?

When it comes to dairy, I find it hard to advise for or against it. On one hand, most strict paleo eaters avoid it like it’s plague. It was not available to our ancestors until the domestication of cows, so we should not eat dairy. Most of us are simply not genetically adapted to consume it. On the other hand, some embrace raw full fat dairy. Some of them are influenced by the Weston A. Price Foundation. The WAPF states that dairy played an important part in most traditional cultures. Others refer to Masai to claim that dairy is healthy. The diet of Masai is a mix of blood, milk, meat and animal fats. It’s hard to make a choice because both sides have good arguments. Anyhow, let’s take a look at why you should – or should not – eat dairy.

Food tips for trekking

Trekking is such a great activity. You get to be far from the office and enjoy the beautiful landscapes. You also get sun exposure, which is pretty much absent from city folks’ lives nowadays. Trekking is fun because it reminds us of our ancestors’ daily activities. Lots of slow walking, some climbing here and there, and camping at night. Most of all, it reminds us that their lives were not centred around stress. They were highly stressed when they met predators, but that’s about it. Civilization is built on stress. The state and the job employers tell us how much we should produce and we have to respect a deadline. Let’s see how you could improve your performance by eating the right foods whenever you go out trekking.

Researchers say that our tongue can detect fat taste

http://watchmojo.com/blogs/images/steak_fat.jpgWe know that the human tongue can detect five tastes : sweet, sour, bitter, salt and umami. According to researchers of Deakin University, there would be a 6th taste that was previously unidentified – fat. They tested a group of people and ranked them as hypo or hypersensitive to fat. Based on their results, humans who are hypersensitive to fat are associated with lower BMI and energy intake (lower oral fat intake). They published their results in the British Journal of Nutrition (look for the study called oral sensitivity to fatty acids, food consumption and BMI in human subjects) in March 2010. Local journalists as well as other journalists all over the world believe that this is could cure obesity. All we have to do is make people hypersensitive to fat and they will subsequently reduce their fat intake. But, is this really what we want?

A few tips for sugar cravings

http://image3.examiner.com/images/blog/wysiwyg/image/lemon%289%29.jpg

Lemon : a possible way to satisfy your sugar cravings.

Paleo dieting is about eating foods that we were meant to eat. Sugar is one of those foods that we were not meant to eat on a regular basis. The Paleo man probably ate honey when he could find it and had the courage to fight the bees to get it – but that’s about it. Of course, this is old news for most of my readers. As we know, sugar is addictive and raises insulin levels in a manner that we don’t want. Also, as it was documented recently by Mark Sisson here,  when you go from a high carbohydrate diet to a low carbohydrate one, you may feel like you have no energy. This is due to the fact that you are teaching your body how to use dietary fat and stored body fat to fuel your body instead of sugar. Once your body is adapted to the diet change, you will find that you have more energy than before (and no energy crashes).
